We're in the midst of busy summer schedules with birthday parties, vacations, play dates and summer camp. I haven't had much time to post my updates although we are cooking local like crazy this summer. Basically, I don't have time to stop at a ton of places to food shop so whatever is at Greensgrow on Saturdays or the farm market on Thursdays is what is on the menu.
Before we committed to going local, we were a seafood family. The boys really like grilled fish and shellfish so we had it often. However, I really have not taken the time to source local fish, so it has not been on the menu much lately. It also seems that I'm not the only one struggling with this question.
You'd think having the Atlantic ocean within your 100 miles this would not be a problem. I was thinking about this again the other day when my mom, Who lives in Ohio, mentioned one of the local family farms had started a small shrimp hatchery. She's thrilled since she doesn't have to worry about the ethical and environmental implications of buying farmed shrimp.
So you cannot imagine my excitement when our Greensgrow CSA announced that they were going to start offering local fish as an option for the weekly meat share. This past week we got New Jersey Bluefish in the share. We opted to grill it with salt and pepper and sprinkle it with fresh lemon juice and local cilantro.
Dinner also included fresh New Jersey Blue Berries purchased from the market at Greensgrow, bread from Sarcones bakery, Amish butter from our share, and White Corn - A.L. Gaventa & Sons, Paulsboro, NJ, also part of our share.
The kids opted for apple cider from Kaufmann's and we are on a Victory Beer kick with Hops Devil.
Non-local ingredients, salt, pepper and lemon juice, olive oil.
